Star Trek Online is arguably the best Star Trek game ever made. However, it might seem like a feeble praise – most Star Trek video games have been pretty bad. And it’s nearly impossible to get your hands on the best (like Bridge Commander or Elite Force) by legitimate means.
So, is Star Trek Online worth your time or should you go back to the wormhole until a better game comes along?
Fan Service galore
For better or for worse, this game is primarily designed for hardcore Star Trek fan. There are major stories that represent virtually every iteration of the franchise. There are also popular characters and stories Star Trek books in this game (including fan favorite novel character Mackenzie Calhoun).
Star Trek Online also lets you dress up in virtually any uniform from any era Star Trek. Likewise, you have the opportunity to pilot nearly every major starship, from the major classes (such as the Galaxy and Defiant classes) to the minor classes glimpsed in the background battles (including the dark Klingon and Romulan ships).
With all of this fan service, the only real downside is that it could be confusing for non-fans if they just want to dive in and play.
Boldly going
The Starship Enterprise motto has always been “to go boldly” and “seek new life and new civilizations”. This game brings that energy to life in an important way.
There is a very large map of the galaxy and you spend a lot of time traveling from one end to the other. And, as in the shows and movies, it’s not uncommon to come across other adventures and misadventures on the way to completing what feels like a routine mission.
A word of warning: if you don’t like exploring, you may not like how long it takes to navigate from point to point. While it is possible to increase your top speed, you may find yourself yearning for days when you just grab a soda while traveling fast in games like World of Warcraft.
