The game is set in the ancient Roman empire where gladiators are still one thing and the protagonist that players play as he escaped from Caesar’s army and is free to venture into the free world i.e. if they can overcome all obstacles that they present their way. In this article, we will look at Gladiators: Survival in Rome and share our first impressions of the game.

The game features a procedurally generated open world, historical setting, craftsmanship, combat and everything else you can find in a classic RPG, along with the goal of building your own city. Along with this, the game also allows you to team up with other players or face them.

Starting with the Gladiators: Survival in Rome revision, the game starts off quite simply, teaching you the basics of cooking, resource gathering, trading, building, repairing items, and quests. There are a lot of missions that introduce the characters and the base story.

At first the game is pretty straightforward as players switch between skills, discovering different actions and completing missions. Most of the initial gameplay consists of simply completing missions and collecting the basic supplies you’ll need to survive. The game features an overhead view and looks pretty well designed and finished with a few minor glitches here and there.

Resistance can prove to be a spoilsport for even the strongest of Gladiators

One of the most interesting elements, however, are the minigames and puzzles that are addictive and will engage the players a little. Some are even custom remakes of other popular but simplistic games. Moving forward, there is some room for players to explore and quite a lot of content to play on so it doesn’t get out of date too quickly.

Aside from that, the game is pretty standard. There isn’t much to the story and it just drives players a little bit here and there while the combat mechanics are pretty standard hack and slash style controls.

One of the things players may notice is how enemies spawn in areas that have been cleared, even those out of thin air and that could be worked on a little. The game isn’t too gritty and there is an automatic mode, however, which isn’t of much use as it only performs small actions by itself. Not many bugs or glitches were observed during a playthrough of the game.

The game offers good graphics along with smooth controls

Gladiators: Survival in Rome looks good visually and has plenty of neat-looking animations, although they may not always fit the action. The game has a refined look and at times, it feels like it resembles the visual art of games like Albion online.

In terms of audio, there is nothing to complain about and the game has a decent audio track (although there is only one song that plays on a loop). There were no problems with the controls or the user interface. They are pretty standard and work as expected.

IAPs can turn out to be a bigger villain than the resistance system

The game has ads and IAPs, and as mentioned above, the monetization system with stamina isn’t the best. It is one of the biggest flaws in the game and if it were made more player friendly, the game would be considered a much better title.

Final verdict

Overall, Gladiators: Survival in Rome comes across as a decent action strategy title with the stamina system being the only flaw (which has really always negatively impacted any game it’s been a part of). A recovery time isn’t necessarily bad, but it only makes sense when it lasts a couple of minutes, not a full day. It’s not game-breaking as it reduces your speed, but it’s not ideal either.

Aside from that, the gameplay is fun and worth playing if you can get through the stamina system. There is a lot of content to play on, a lot of areas to explore. So, if you’re looking for a strategic city building simulation with some action, this title is worth checking out.
