With Spider-Man: Remastered out next month, it’s time to check out the original game. Marvel’s Spider-Man was released for PlayStation 4 in 2018. The game has received a lot of praise from fans of the classic superhero. This was really exciting because quality games with the New York webslinger are quite rare.
It is commonly said that the 2004 film tie-in, Spider-Man 2, is the best game to use the hero. If that’s true, then how does Marvel’s Spider-Man stack up against the champion of the past?
The flow of combat
Marvel’s Spider-Man uses a lot of combat mechanics that you might find in the popular Batman Arkham series. Fans of superhero games will be very familiar with this game cycle. However, Marvel’s Spider-Man successfully gives this style of play an identity of its own.
Spidey is extremely agile in the face of groups of enemies. The player will have many options on how to deal with a situation early in the game. These options only grow as the story and character progress. Various powers, gadgets, and even combos allow for a deep and satisfying combat experience.
Of course, the balance of power between enemies is also handled well. The standard thugs and criminals that players deal with on the streets are much weaker than the enemies found in many of the story missions. When the player and Spider-Man face a real threat, it quickly becomes clear that things have gotten a little more serious.
That said, the game isn’t incredibly challenging at even higher difficulties. Not a bad thing, however. Marvel’s Spider-Man is a game that’s easy to have fun and relax with.
