If a company dominates the simulation racing market right now, it’s definitely Codemasters. Not only do they have Dirt Rally 2.0 in their portfolio, but they have also acquired the rights to Formula 1 and have released a number of successful titles over the past five years. You see their name on a pilot’s cover and you know it means quality. This developer has gained a lot of trust.

Guide

The previous Dirt Rally set the bar quite high even though it had some minor problems. The main one was that the management could at times just seem unpleasant. The car may refuse to respond to your steering. The next crash into a tree seemed completely out of your control.

Fortunately, that’s definitely not the case in the sequel. Dirt Rally 2.0 is incredibly sensitive. Even with a controller rather than a steering wheel setup, it’s like you’re really in the driver’s seat. Take a little off-road trip in this title and the blame will be totally on your shoulders.

This is not to say that you are always in complete control. Maneuvering your car around a tight hairpin and then accelerating often feels like you’re on the verge of turning your precious vehicle into complete disaster.

Drama

Dirt Rally 2.0 creates more drama than even the best horror or thriller games. Build tension at every turn you can safely get around. The tension builds so much that you unconsciously lean forward as the end of a phase approaches. It’s so easy to almost end up on your living room floor.

All this makes the end of a rally stage feel like a real milestone. Especially when you know that any major mistake on your part would add dozens of seconds to your time and drop you in order.

The fact that no two tracks feel the same increases the excitement. Never take a corner the same way twice. Each attempt constantly evolves based on how you struggled with the car around the last corner. It is a truly exhilarating game where you constantly strive for perfection knowing that it is impossible to achieve. Dirt Rally 2.0 doesn’t expect perfection, but it does require you to do your best to achieve it.
