At this point, Fortnite feels like a lot more than just a game. It is a full-blown cultural phenomenon. He also made a brief cameo in Avengers: End of the gamecementing its place in pop culture history.

However, players can be very fickle. What is popular today may be replaced tomorrow. And a game’s sheer popularity doesn’t always indicate it’s as good as a new player might think.

So, is this free-to-play game worth your time? Or should you play another Battle Royale game like Apex Legends? Read on to find out the answer!

Bigger is better

The first thing you’ll notice about Fortnite is that it’s big. If you’re used to playing games like Overwatch or Halo (which are typically split into 6v6 or 4v4 rounds), Fortnite’s 100-player games will feel huge.

Even compared to other Battle Royale games, Fortnite looks pretty choky – its current closest competitor, Apex Legends, currently only has 60 players as its maximum. So, Fortnite is a great game and that ends up being both a blessing and a curse.

The sheer size of these matches makes each match more epic than it would otherwise be. And the victory is really special: when your team is the last to survive, it seems like you’ve really accomplished something.

However, the size of the game can make it difficult for new players (more on that later), and it virtually guarantees that most matches will end in quick death instead of the kind of epic gunfights you might expect.

Fortnite evolves

We like to see a game that really evolves instead of resting on its laurels. And Fortnite is a game that has been doing it long before it got that popular.

The original concept of the game was Fortnite Saves the World, a game obviously inspired by Minecraft. Players have mined resources, repelled undead enemies, and found ever more creative ways to live off the land.

As Battle Royale games became popular, Fortnite moved into that space, but kept the Minecraft-style elements. This is probably the most unique thing about Fortnite – you have to gather resources and build structures as well as find weapons and hunt down enemies.

The game has continued to grow and evolve ever since, rewarding players who may be concerned that the game will always look the same.
