Released in September 2019, GreedFall is the work of French developer Spiders. Over the past decade, the company has released a wide variety of RPGs with varying degrees of success. Still, they never managed to release that game that places them among the elite.

Each of their efforts thus far has been flawed to some degree, some more than others. No one has been able to stand up to the great examples of the genre that have come out in recent times. The question is: Does GreedFall keep its promises and surpass its predecessors?

History

The initial concept of GreedFall involved a strong focus on the story and the characters. The first references were made to classic BioWare RPG series, such as Mass Effect and Dragon Age. These are ambitious goals, yet the RPG at first looks promising.

Inspired by the 17th century, GreedFall is set on a newly discovered island. Several colonial powers are vying to subdue the native inhabitants and take control of paradise. Take on the role of De Sardet, a merchant in search of a cure for the disease that afflicts his family.

Despite this potential, GreedFall fails to tell a very interesting story. There was an opportunity to explore issues such as colonialism and the impact it has on those it affects. Unfortunately, the game tackles concepts like this with all the subtlety of a steamroller.

Another problem is that there are too many stereotypes when dealing with local natives. Such is the lack of tact that often borders on the offensive. The rest of the storyline is just your standard fantasy tropes, with nothing original or fanciful brought to the table.

This is not to say that the entire narrative is affected. Some missions have excellent writing behind them. And some characters are interesting, but there aren’t enough of them.
