Darwin Project is the latest in a long line of free-to-play titles born with the advent of battle royale games like Fortnite. The work of Scavengers Studio is currently in early access on Steam and Xbox Game Preview. As a result, there are still many areas that need improvement and the game is constantly changing as development continues. What there is, though, certainly works quite well and there are some features that make Darwin Project stand out from the crowd.

The Darwin project takes place in a future marked by a kind of apocalypse, leaving the world marked. As part of a twisted science experiment and entertainment show, participants are left in the play area and left to fight each other until one rises victorious and alone. It’s a concept we’ve seen countless times but this game manages to change it a bit thanks to the director.

The director

Generally, Darwin Project only has 10 active fighters in each game. However, there is an eleventh player who assumes the role of Director throughout the game. The director acts as an attorney for the audience, following the contestants at their leisure and filming everything on video as they zoom in on the map. The director is not simply a spectator. Any player taking this role can have a huge impact on each round by influencing certain factors.

For example, the Director can make some players invincible for a short amount of time, stop the cold hitting them, or even make them a target so that other players are rewarded for taking them down. The Director may also distribute skills in the form of electronics. The director’s main job is to make things as fun to watch as possible. It’s a hook that really adds another level to the battle royale genre.
