Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War review

The fact that the Call of Duty franchise is still going strong after so many years is impressive in itself. Over the past decade, the series has changed a lot. It has had games set in the future, titles set in World War II, and more experimental experiences.

With Call of Duty: Black Cold War, Activision is back to its roots. While it’s not a reboot, it’s a direct continuation of the story from the first Black Ops game. It also aims to be a worthy follow-up to what is considered to be one of the best voices in the series. For the most part, it manages to do just that, despite some glaring problems.

History

Some recent Call of Duty games have been criticized for their stories. In fact, some titles haven’t even had a true singleplayer campaign. This is not the case with Black Ops Cold War. Developer Treyarch is known for its more narrative Call of Duty titles. The game includes a full-fledged spy story which is actually quite compelling to follow. As a sequel, a lot of what’s going on will feel familiar. There are returning characters and a storyline that follows a similar formula to the original.

What the game does good is really embrace the 80’s setting. There are historical characters and many intrigues. By the end of the story, players will see several twists and turns. Some even completely flip the entire storyline in crazy ways you wouldn’t expect. There is also the possibility of making a number of choices that can affect the ending. This provides more drama and really helps immerse you more fully in the story. That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a great narrative, but it’s one of the best in the Call of Duty series.

Interestingly, Black Ops Cold War added some very light RPG elements to the story. Players can actually customize the protagonist in some way. The choice of certain elements of our past affects the player’s traits. This could mean that you gain some extra health or can swap weapons faster than you normally would. These choices also come into play in the plot, with some significant consequences. It’s a unique idea to the series, and it works quite well by adding some more interactive elements.
