Remember when military games were the biggest ticket in the gaming industry? Lately, shooters have offered a more casual gaming experience with the rise of the battle royale genre – games like Fortnite and Apex Legends have become the trend standard. Thankfully, in the midst of the saturation of today’s war shooters and battle royale games, Battlefield 1 it seems like a unique and useful experience.
2016 saw a shift in the first person shooter genre. Shooters no longer relied on old war theaters. Overwatch offered a colorful yet competitive superhero-themed experience. The Doom reboot increased the violence and brutality to offer players a nostalgic arcade experience. Even core titles like Call of Duty and Halo have taken their cues from newcomers like Titanfall, transforming futuristic virtual combat into a frenzied ballet of parkour and action.
Meanwhile, Battlefield 1 does the opposite. Not only does it strive to recreate the horrors of combat, it travels back in time to explore WWI, something rarely adapted in between.
Gritty atmosphere
Battlefield 1 sports a raw vibe with gorgeous graphics and sound design that still hold up today. The World War I setting also helps aesthetics. There is no future technology here. Instead, the historic weapons and muddy trenches lend a sense of realism to the game’s combat not found in similar titles of the era.
Game models scream as they load up and call each other in terror. The battles are filled with photorealistic smoke and particle effects. The fire, sparks and dirt rising from the ground make the firefights intense. These features, along with Battlefield’s signature destructible environments and large orchestral soundtracks, make battles immersive and dynamic.
