Banana split, the American dessert recipe

The name itself indicates the base and the main ingredient: the banana “split” (“split”, in fact), or cut in half lengthwise, covered with ice cream, candied fruit, whipping cream and dried fruit. The classic banana split is topped with a combination of vanilla ice cream, chocolate and strawberry, enriched with a chocolate syrup, cream and maraschino cherries. However, you can also use other flavors of ice cream, such as pistachio, cream and cherry, and you can use your favorite candied fruit, as well as vary the syrup: particularly suitable and pleasant are the caramel or strawberry syrups. You can add coconut flakes, chocolate chips, biscuit grains… in short, give vent to your imagination and prepare a delicious, complete and scenographic dessert in less than 15 minutes!

Method

Pour the cream into a glass bowl and whip it with an electric mixer at maximum speed for about 2 minutes. If you have purchased fresh cream without sugar, add 5 g of icing sugar. As soon as you have finished assembling it, insert it in a sac-à-few or in a syringe for sweets with a star nozzle.

Peel a banana, which should be ripe and firm, showing no brown spots. With a knife, cut it in half along the long side.

Arrange the banana halves on an oval plate and add the ice cream. Start by filling with a scoop of chocolate ice cream.

Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream to the center, followed by a scoop of strawberry ice cream. Decorate with the chocolate sauce as a topping.

With the sac-à-poche, make tufts of whipped cream around the banana, so as to garnish the dish. Make tufts of cream also on the scoops of ice cream.

Decorate the three tufts of cream on the ice cream with candied cherries. Add the pistachio grain and serve immediately.

Advice and tips

Banana split is a dessert that is usually served in oval dishes, but you can use any saucer to serve it at home. You can also use the type of plate or container “boat”, with slightly higher edges.

You can also add other fresh fruit such as strawberries or berries, but also pineapple or kiwi.

If you don’t find the chocolate topping you can use 2 tablespoons of spreadable hazelnut cream: just heat it for 20 seconds in the microwave to make it more fluid and pour it onto your banana split. Alternatively, you can melt 50 g of milk chocolate in the microwave with 1 tablespoon of milk at maximum power for 40 seconds. Another alternative is to use dried fruit cream, which you can find in organic supermarkets.

If you are lactose intolerant you can use soy ice cream and vegetable or lactose free cream.

You can also create a nice buffet: arrange all the ingredients on the table (bananas cut into slices, whipped cream or spray cream, ice cream in trays of various flavors, candied cherries, different toppings and chopped dried fruit such as pistachios, hazelnuts, almonds, peanuts) and make spoons and saucers available to diners. Each diner can make their own personalized banana split!
