Curiosities and suggestions

  • When buying we choose whole apples, with the peel intact, firm pulp, without bruises and with the stalk attached.
  • Apples release ethylene, a substance that accelerates the ripening of fruit and vegetables. We can then put an apple in a bag with fruits such as kiwi and avocado to help them ripen. Let’s keep them away instead of potatoes and bananas.
  • Once cut, we can sprinkle them with lemon juice to prevent them from blackening.
  • The peel of apples contains pectin, a gelling substance often used to give texture to jams and marmalades. We can also dry it and prepare delicious infusions.
  • Let’s make this dessert more scenic by decorating with dried fruit, crumbled macaroons or spices like cinnamon. In particular, I used some caramelized hazelnuts that they gave me for Christmas, which we can replace with other dried fruit, or with some dried fruit crunch that we can easily prepare at home.
  • We can also make cooked apples and then blend them and create further recipes, as well as being able to enjoy them in all their simplicity, not only hot to warm up cold winter days, but also warm or cold.
  • There are many varieties of apple available, which differ in color, sweetness and firmness of the pulp. We will be able to choose our favorite apple, taking into account its characteristics for the dose of sugar that we can not add or replace with honey and for the cooking time. Firmer-fleshed apples they will take more time to soften, unlike apples with softer pulp.
