Back in June, YouTube announced that it was running a “small experiment” globally in which it invited a small subset of people who used ad blockers to disable them if they wanted to view content on the platform.

This is no longer a “little experiment”. YouTube now says it is launching a global effort to crack down on ad blockers and encourage users to allow advertising or pay for YouTube Premium (where there are no ads).

This comes directly from YouTube communications manager Christopher Lawton. When you come across YouTube’s ad blocker, you’ll see a message like the one in the screenshot above. The most important thing is this: “video playback is blocked unless YouTube is whitelisted or ad blocker is disabled.”

As expected, you have two choices: allow advertising or try YouTube Premium, and that’s it. YouTube’s expansion of ad blocking has happened gradually over the past few weeks.

According to Lawton, the use of ad blockers violates the platform’s terms of service. “Advertising supports a diverse ecosystem of creators globally and enables billions to access their favorite content on YouTube,” she said.
