introduction

The best iPhone ever, version 2022, size XL: we have iPhone 14 Pro Max. The big news this year include the notch that turns into a pill, the introduction of an Always-On display and a brand new main camera – and while you can get it all on the 14 Pro, the extra screen tightness and longevity coupled with Max’s “ultimate” status means it has its own niche in the market.

The Face ID notch that has been with us since the iPhone X was no one’s favorite, and perhaps its reincarnation as a pill is a step towards its eventual removal. But not before turning the eyesore into a feature: the pill is a dynamic island of notifications, blurring the line between hardware and software.

Likewise is the Always-On display, a software feature made possible only now in the world of Apple thanks to LTPO displays capable of reducing the refresh rate to 1Hz.

Among the key developments this year there is also a massive increase in brightness, this only in the hardware department.

Late for yet another party, Apple finally joins practically all the other manufacturers and introduces a camera with a Quad Bayer type sensor: the specs on the 48 MP main unit do not read like the others, so apparently it is an exclusive design. The telephoto lens remains unchanged, but the ultrawide got a sensor size update, while the front one now features autofocus (and possibly OIS too).

On the hardware front, of course, there is the mandatory chipset update and little else worth mentioning. Well, there’s the dimmed SIM card slot for US models, which will only work with eSIMs – does that count as a hardware change? Incident detection and emergency satellite connectivity are also on the list of new features that combine software and hardware.

Unboxing of Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max

Almost nothing has changed in the presentation of the iPhone 14 Pro Max compared to last year’s model. The half-height box has a phone color similarity printed on the lid and opens with a pair of paper tear tabs.

Inside, the phone is lying face down, with its back greeting you as you remove the cover. There’s no bundled charger, but there’s still a USB-C to Lightning cable, at least. And an Apple sticker, because it’s free advertising.
