As expected, today Xiaomi introduced the 14 series with the newly announced Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, refreshed Leica-branded main cameras, a new design and Xiaomi’s new HyperOS.

Xiaomi 14Pro

The Xiaomi 14 Pro moves away from the curved edges of its predecessor and instead brings a flat metal side. The frame has a mirror polished finish. The phone has a symmetrical design and the two glass panels taper slightly at the ends. The camera island sits on a metal bezel finished with a Parisian nail structure.

The Xiaomi 14 Pro is the larger phone, featuring a 6.73-inch 1440×3200 px 12-bit LTPO OLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate, which is mostly the same specs as the 13 Pro. However this panel it illuminates up to 3,000 nits and is covered by Xiaomi Longjing Glass. Xiaomi also claims that the bezels are thinner around the display.

Xiaomi has ditched the 1-inch sensor for the 14 Pro and is instead previewing a new sensor dubbed the “Light Nunter 900″ with a custom Leica Summilux lens. The sensor is a 50 MP 1/1.31” with a pixel size of 1.2 μm and 13.5 EV of dynamic range. The custom 23 mm lens has a variable aperture, ranging from f/1.42 in its widest at f/4.0 when closed. The sensor may be about 44% smaller than the 1-inch imager in last year’s 13 Pro, but this new lens is about 80% brighter, therefore the overall light collection capacity is practically unchanged.

Then there’s the 75mm f/2.0 mobile telephoto lens, apparently taken directly from last year’s Xiaomi 13 Pro, capable of taking photos as close as 10cm. It will capture 40MP regular photos and 50MP portrait mode images. The third camera is a 50MP f/2.2 14mm ultrawide camera with 5cm macro capability.

Let’s move on to the Xiaomi 14: a solid addition to the compact and dry flagship segment. It shares the Pro’s new symmetrical design, although last year’s Xiaomi 13 already had a flat bezel and more angular corners.

In fact, the Xiaomi 14 is essentially identical in size to its predecessor at 152.8mm long, 71.5mm wide and 8.20mm thick. The new phone comes in two finishes: a 193g glass version and a lighter 188g nano-leather model.

The display has retained the 6.36-inch diagonal but otherwise it is a superior 1200×2670 px LTPO OLED panel with a 120 Hz refresh rate and a peak brightness of 3,000 nits.

The cameras on the smaller 14 might look identical to those on the 14 Pro, but there are subtle differences. The 50MP main camera has the same 1/1.31″ “Light Hunter” sensor with 1.2μm pixels, although the lens on top is a 23mm f/1.6 aperture unit The 75mm mobile telephoto is identical, although the 50MP 14mm ultrawide appears to lack AF and, consequently, macro functionality.
