After introducing the long-requested ability to use the same account seamlessly across one phone and multiple devices in 2021, WhatsApp is back today with the logical conclusion to that effort. The service now offers what must be the most requested feature ever.

You can use the same WhatsApp account on up to five phones. You connect each additional phone the same way you connect to WhatsApp on web browsers, tablets and desktops. Each connected phone connects to WhatsApp independently, ensuring your messages, media and calls remain end-to-end encrypted.

Also, if your primary phone is idle “for an extended period” (the company doesn’t specify anything more precise), you’ll automatically be logged out of all associated devices, as a safety precaution.

So now you can finally switch between phones without leaving WhatsApp. You can use multiple phones with the same WhatsApp account logged into each one. Long live progress!

This update has already started rolling out to all users globally. The rollout will conclude “in the coming weeks”.

In addition, WhatsApp is also rolling out (in the same coming weeks) a “more accessible way” to connect to companion devices. You’ll be able to enter your phone number on WhatsApp Web to receive a one-time code, which you can use on your phone to enable device linking, instead of having to scan a QR code. This is only rolling out to WhatsApp Web right now, but it’s promised to come to “more companion devices in the future.”
