introduction

Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 is the thinnest foldable phone on the market in 2022 – an impressive achievement that should immediately put it in the spotlight for some time. Unfortunately, few will be able to buy this Mix Fold 2 as it is exclusively available in China.

Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 review

It appears that Xiaomi has no interest in selling its state-of-the-art smartphones outside of China. The Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra has not arrived on international markets, the first Mix Fold has not, the excellent Xiaomi 12S Ultra has not, and now the Mix Fold 2 is here to show us what we cannot have.

With that outburst now over, let’s explore this Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 that recently arrived in our office.

The new Mix Fold 2 is a huge upgrade over the previous Mix Fold. For starters, it’s much thinner and lighter: the folded Fold 2 is just 11mm thick (vs.17mm) and weighs 262g (vs.317g). It has an improved hinge, Gorilla Glass Victus front, aluminum frame, and frosted back glass.

The two screens in the Mix Fold are among the best the industry has to offer. The front (cover) one is a 6.56 inch OLED with standard 1080p resolution and traditional 21: 9 aspect. It also impresses with a 120Hz refresh rate, HDR10 + and Dolby Vision support.

The centerpiece of the Mix Fold 2 is obviously the foldable display. It’s the largest on the market to date – an 8.02-inch LTPO2 foldable OLED panel with no cutouts. It can display over 1B of colors, supports 120Hz refresh rate, is HDR10 +, and is Dolby Vision certified. In addition to the high refresh rate improvement over the Mix Fold, this screen is also brighter and should be less reflective.

The Mix Fold 2 uses the most current Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset and is paired with 12GB of RAM. This is in line with the current crop of flagships and a good upgrade over the Snapdragon 888 chipset within the first Mix Fold.

The rear camera is another sight – it’s a triple Leica-powered setup with a 50MP OIS primary, an 8MP 2x OIS telephoto lens, and a 13MP ultrawide camera with AF. Indeed, this makes the Mix Fold 2 yet another Xiaomi-Leica partnership that few will have access to, but that’s what it is.

There is one aspect where the Mix Fold 2 has been downgraded from the Mix Fold: there are now two speakers instead of four. But they should be bigger than before and are tuned by harmon / kardon. There is also support for Dolby Atmos.

Finally, the Mix Fold 2 is powered by a 4,500mAh battery that supports 67W wired fast charging.

Samsung’s most current Galaxy Z Fold4 has two main advantages over the Mix Fold 2 should they go head to head. The Galaxy is IPX8 rated for water resistance and runs Android 12L instead of the regular Android 12, which offers native support for foldable screens with a few special tweaks. The Mix Fold 2 cannot match the usability Samsung offers on its Galaxy, although there are some promising features that are part of the MIUI Fold 13.

On the other hand, the Mix Fold 2 is much thinner and offers larger screens and can boast of premium packaging.

Unpack the Mix Fold 2

In fact, the Mix Fold 2 comes inside a large black box, which contains the proprietary 67W charger and the 6A cable needed for fast charging to work. But that’s not all!

You’ll also find a USB-C to 3.5mm adapter inside the box, so you can continue to use your favorite wired headphones. And you get a special leather case with an adjustable kickstand! Nice!

Finally, the cover screen comes with a thin protector that has been applied inside the factory.
