The Asus Zenfone 10 is a popular phone – most people like it in last week’s survey, even if only a few of them can actually get it. We’ll talk about why in a moment, let’s look at the reasons why you liked the phone first.

Its size is definitely a plus: it’s not the smallest smartphone out there, but small ones usually don’t sell well. People also appreciate the flat screen and 3.5mm headphone jack (although a microSD slot would have been nice). The addition of wireless charging has also been well received.

And some want it for the software, they’re drawn to the stock Android UI with Asus enhancements that offer in-depth performance tuning options, things you normally find on ROG devices.

Interest in the Zenfone 10 comes mainly from new users, most don’t see it as a big enough upgrade over the Zenfone 9.

We have to go back to the software as it is also a weakness especially the limited software support. Google and Samsung offer one and two extra updates, respectively. The Zenfone will receive 4 years of security patches, which is better than what Sony offers, but still a year cheaper than Google and Samsung.

That said, Pixel phones are only available in select regions. Zenfone 10 itself is not yet available everywhere. For example, there is no mention of a launch in India (the Zenfone 9 never made it there).

However, Asus needs to work on more things. People have come to expect a way to take zoomed-in photos with their flagship phones, ideally with a dedicated zoom lens or (if not) a higher resolution main camera. The 50MP sensor does a decent (though not great) job at 2x, but you can’t go much beyond that.

The display is nice, but that 144Hz mode is only supported by a handful of games. Instead of paying extra for a 120Hz panel, the budget could have been spent elsewhere.

And of course, price is a concern. Especially considering the phone’s relatively short support, which will only receive 2 OS updates. For those who want a compact device there is the option of getting a foldable one, but let’s just say it’s not a very popular option.
