There has been a lot of talk that the next iPhone SE model will be based on the iPhone XR from the era of the first notch. Leakster Jon Prosser confirms this with information from an anonymous source, information that was used by Ian Zelbo to create these 3D renderings.

The feeling of deja vu is understandable, the SE series is several years behind the premium models. The notch is back and this is the original one, the narrower notch only arrived last year with the iPhone 13 series. Also, say hello to the fingerprint reader and physical home button.

Old school single camera design is a blast from the past. On the other hand, the Midnight, Starlight and Product (RED) colors are new. The XR color scheme, huh, with yellow, red and blue doesn’t look much different from the palette of the new iPad 10th gen.

Either way, the only major hardware upgrade we can expect is the chipset. The iPhone XR has an Apple A12, the SE (2022) has an A15, as does the non-Pro duo iPhone 14. This doesn’t really leave any options other than the A15 as the A16 chip seems too expensive for an SE model. Apple can use the 5-core GPU version of the A15 to provide a small upgrade over the current SE.

On top of that, we might see more RAM, more a bigger battery, and / or faster charging. These are the main differences between the iPhone SE (2022) and the iPhone 8 it is based on and it’s mainly about catching up with the times.

There is one more thing: the charging port. It’s possible it’s a USB-C port instead of lighting. However, the phone will boot before it expires, so it may be left with Lightning one last time. However, we’ve already seen the iPad’s latest suspension switch to Type-C, so it might be time to move on.
