Last week’s survey leaves no secrets about which of the new iPhone 15 models is the most popular: sure, it’s expensive, the periscope camera is unknown, and older models are still competitive, but the iPhone 15 Pro Max is the one to have from this generation.

Regardless of why it happened, the move to USB-C is a big deal (especially at USB 3.1 speeds). The lighter structure due to the switch to titanium is also important. And the camera’s longer lens addresses a long-standing flaw in Apple’s expensive flagship.

And just as importantly, these aren’t things you get with last year’s models. This is why the Pro Max has the smallest share of “I’ll stick with an older iPhone” responses. On the other hand, it has the highest percentage of “it’s too expensive” responses, but at least this year the base capacity is 256GB.

The iPhone 15 Pro also has some of these advantages, but more importantly it features the same camera as last year. And it has 128GB of base storage, which has some limitations: for example, ProRes video recording is limited to 1080p at 30 fps. However, the fast USB-C port means you can connect external storage and eliminate that restriction (and with how cheap external SSDs are these days, you can record for as long as you want).

This is just the first benefit of surpassing the USB 2.0 speeds that Lightning was limited to (at least on the iPhone), and we’re bound to see more of it. The lighter titanium build is also important since the iPhone 15 Pro is one of the smallest flagships around (it’s about the same size as the Galaxy S23 and Zenfone 10).

Things are looking pretty rough for the iPhone 15. We haven’t seen much praise for the move from a notch to Dynamic Island, but leaving the refresh rate at 60fps still makes it a tough sell. The only major upgrade this year is the 48MP main camera, but it apparently doesn’t have much upside. So unless the camera and USB-C port are a must-have for you, an iPhone 14 wouldn’t look much different.

Then things get really tricky: the iPhone 15 Plus will likely follow its predecessor by being the least popular option of the family. The Vanilla 15 at least has some fans and some that are holding off until reviews give the new features a thumbs up. The Plus, however, received very few positive votes.

Current predictions are that the iPhone 15 Pro Max will be the most popular of the 15 series (more popular even than the 14 Pro Max was last year). The survey results support this, and we’re sure Apple doesn’t care that its most expensive phone is also its most popular. However, demand for the smaller Pro may suffer due to a lack of camera upgrades.
