Samsung Display will discontinue LCD production at the end of June, six months ahead of the previously announced schedule. Insiders revealed that the competition was too fierce and Samsung Group wanted to limit losses.

Samsung Display will focus on the production of OLED and QD (quantum-dot) panels and its employees are expected to be transferred to the QD business.

Samsung will close the LCD business six months ahead of schedule

Reports from Display Supply Chain Consultants revealed that the price of an LCD is 36.6% compared to January 2014, the period of maximum production of the component. This is largely due to manufacturers such as BOE from China and AU Optronics from Taiwan joining the battle and offering lower prices to customers.

The LCD business was initially supposed to close in 2020, but with the arrival of COVID-19 and the need for affordable home entertainment devices (including inexpensive smartphones and tablets), Samsung has decided to postpone this important step.

Company representatives were unavailable for comment and we have no information on the details of the investment plan so far. We expect to hear more once the second quarter is over and earnings reports will be released in late July.
