A new Fossil-branded smartwatch is now getting the Wear OS 3 update. The Skagen Falster Gen 6 was announced about a year ago in early 2022 and launched with the Snapdragon Wear 4100+ platform. The smartwatch had been promised the new update since its initial launch and despite an original timeline of H2 2022, the update arrived about a couple of weeks late.

Users in a Reddit thread posted information about the update in progress. One owner reported that there were fewer Skagen watch faces, and none of the Pixel Watch faces are available with the update. Apparently, there are only 8 faces of Skagen. Others point out some missing features here and there. Like the October update for Fossil Gen 6, Google Assistant is missing from the update. This is due to some hardware limitations of Wear OS 3 and Google Assistant. Currently, Assistant is only available on Wear OS 3 watches running Samsung’s wearable Exynos chipsets
One user claims the update contains the same build number as the Fossil Gen 6 smartwatches, which received the same update in October. Another user’s first impressions mention that the UI is smoother and faster, and there are no noticeable differences in battery life. Another person said that connectivity and app options have improved on iOS.

If you want to download the Wear OS 3 update for this smartwatch, you should know that all user data on the smartwatch will be erased and you will need to set up the watch with the new Skagen companion app. As mentioned above, you will also lose access to using Google Assistant on your wrist. Let’s hope Google works with Qualcomm and does what it needs to bring back the Assistant. Alexa is otherwise available as an alternative voice assistant.
