The vivo X100 series will take better photos than ever during sunset, revealed Jia Jingdong, vice president and head of the vivo brand. The executive revealed the duo’s key specs in a lengthy post on Weibo, including a Dimensity 9300 chipset and a vivo V3 ISP for Zeiss-branded T*-coated lens cameras.

He added that the phones don’t take actual photos of the moon; the images are “computing photographs” where the device knows the geographic location and phase of the moon. Simply put, the phone uses available data to calculate the state and position of the moon and then uses higher quality images to enhance it.

Jia posted several images of the sun with the periscope lens and two more with the shorter telephoto lens: one of a person and another of a ladybug on a plant.

The executive boldly claimed that vivo X100 phones will take realistic photos of the sun during sunset. The reality is that a smartphone can’t handle those either: it needs ideal conditions where the sun is at its lowest point on the horizon, there are no clouds, and light refraction lowers the overall brightness.

Direct sunlight during the day is over 125,000 lumens, while during sunrise and sunset it is about a quarter of that at around 32,000 lumens. However, a powerful SoC, along with a dedicated image signal processor developed to shoot such scenarios, could do a similar trick to moon shots by using known data about the sun’s position to bring it back into the photo.

The challenge with overall brightness remains, though, as it means other objects are very underexposed. The vivo ISP promises to solve this problem by essentially isolating the sun from its calculations, processing the rest of the image, and then adding the improved version of the sun itself.

This is not a new feature for vivo smartphones. The vivo X90 Pro already took stunning photos at dawn and dusk. We expect the vivo X100 Pro to take it to the next level with this year’s Mediatek flagship chipset.

We also got to see the beautiful orange color of the smartphone with a wavy vegan leather finish. We will have confirmation on November 13th and expect to learn additional features in the ten days leading up to the event.
