Just last week Apple signed a long-term patent deal with Nokia that covers 5G and other technologies. However, Cupertino does not have such an agreement with Optis Cellular Technology, which is suing Apple over eight patents. The UK Court of Appeal just upheld a March 2022 decision saying Apple infringed two of them.

The two patents were found to be essential for 4G connectivity and were found to be used by Apple’s iPhones. Apple appealed the decision in May, but that appeal was rejected by the court.

This is all part of an ongoing legal saga that began four years ago. In 2020 a jury in East Texas ruled that Apple owes $506 million to Optis affiliate PanOptis, then in 2022 the sum was lowered to $300 million, which ultimately stuck as the court decided not to hold a third process.
