After it became clear that the new iPhone 15 series will permanently replace the old Lighting connector with USB-C, the guys at ChargerLAB has dug deeper and obtained some exclusive photos of the port that reveal something very interesting.

According to the publication, new iPhones are equipped with what appears to be a Retimer chip, which is often used to reconstruct signals and reduce signal jitter in Thunderbolt-enabled devices. This, in turn, means that upcoming iPhones will offer Thunderbolt support.

However, ChargeLAB clarifies that Thunderbolt support may only be limited to the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. Either way, it could be a big deal for some users who rely on fast data transfers between devices.

To put things into perspective, the USB 2.0-based Lightning port is capped at 480Mbps, while a typical Thunderbolt interface can go up to 40Gbps. Additionally, the Thunderbolt standard supports higher power input and output, so faster charging may also be on the menu.
