introduction

The pinnacle of power: the Poco F4 GT enters the scene without a lack of audacity in its slogan. It’s not unfounded: the latest chipset and super-fast charging project a picture of power, but there’s a playful side too: you get shoulder-mounted triggers for gaming action, plus a four-driver speaker setup for richer songs.

Having already lived a parallel life in China as the Redmi K50 Gaming since the beginning of this year, the Poco F4 GT is hardly a feature surprise, but it brings a rather unique feature set to global markets without explicitly affixing the “game” label yes. Magnetic pop-up buttons offer game-specific functionality and can also act as shortcuts for general use. They could also be excellent restless toys.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 itself should be great for gaming, but its performance doesn’t discriminate – arguably the apical Android chip at the moment, fits well into the promotional narrative. It’s backed by advanced cooling, minus the fans that some “gaming” phones put into the mix, further solidifying the F4 GT’s position as more of a crossover than a competitor to the world’s Red Magics and Black Sharks.

The power theme continues in the charging section. Xiaomi’s sturdiest 120W adapter is in the box, and the spec sheet promises a full 17-minute charge. We will see about it.

With all that focus on power, something had to give and the F4 GT’s camera system doesn’t live up to the same high standards. It covers the basics with a 64MP head unit and an unassuming 8MP ultrawide, but it’s hardly camera material.

Unboxing of Poco F4 GT

The F4 GT ships in a two piece cardboard box which is the usual Poco mix of yellow and black. Black is not a solid color now, however, it has an added touch of a refined carbon fiber pattern. So while there is no “play” in the name, there is a hint of aesthetics.

A little more effort was also devoted to accessories. The cable for that 120W HyperCharge adapter has a sleek L-shaped plug encased in aluminum – pretty cute out of context, but functional too. The rationale behind the shape is that the cable gets out of the way when you end up having to power your phone during extended gaming sessions. It’s also a premium touch that would have been welcome on true Xiaomi flagships like the 12 and 12 Pro. Oh, and it’s a 1.5m long cable in a world where 1m is the norm.

There’s also a USB-C to 3.5mm dongle in the box – something we haven’t seen bundled in a while. Most commonly included, the clear silicone case isn’t as sophisticated as the cable, but some out-of-the-box protection is better than nothing.
