Qualcomm has announced that it is expanding S3 Gen 2 sound with optimized latency that drops below 20ms for “lag-free gaming audio.” Manufacturers can also use the platform to add Auracast broadcast audio capabilities to dongles and adapters with source devices such as phones, laptops and TVs.

Qualcomm expands the S3 Gen 2 audio platform with 20ms ultra-low latency

The enhanced solution is optimized for gaming, the official press release revealed. It is a combination of Snapdragon Sound and LE Audio. It offers “an extremely low latency of 20ms less than 20ms” and can be further reduced with the source device providing only game audio. Music listeners can enjoy high-resolution 24-bit, 96kHz Bluetooth streaming, enabled through support for Snapdragon Sound and aptX Adaptive audio.

Mike Canevaro, director, marketing and head of Snapdragon Sound at Qualcomm, said the company knows from its annual State of Sound survey that consumers want lag-free audio for gaming and an immersive wireless audio experience. The new platform has been optimized to deliver all of this on a smartphone and not just through proprietary gaming solutions.

The press release also states that headphones and earphones supporting Qualcomm S5 and S3 Gen 2 technology will offer robust connectivity and dynamic latency adaptation. This means gamers will be able to step away from their consoles or PCs and still hear all the action in real time with no audio dropouts.
