In the latest third quarter global market report, Omdia’s numbers echo Canalys: shipments are better than second quarter but worse than third quarter 2021.

In the third quarter, the market experienced a modest 2.5% increase over the second quarter but a 7.6% year-over-year decline.

Samsung maintained its top spot with a total of 64.1 million units shipped – a 3% improvement over the second quarter but a 7.4% drop over the same period last year. Apple is in second place with 52.2 million iPhones shipped, a modest 2.6% improvement over last year. Huawei was the only other manufacturer that didn’t experience a drop in YoY shipments.

Omdia: Q3 22 better than Q2 but worse than last year, only Apple ships more phones

Chinese producers were the hardest hit. Xiaomi shipped 40.5 million phones, an 11.2% decrease from last year. Oppo sold 29.1 million units, down 18.9% year-on-year, while vivo’s 25.3 million phones represent a 22.4% drop. Transsion shipped 15.1 million, 21.7% less than in the third quarter of 2021. Realme was down 11.7% from last year.

Honor remained mostly flat, shipping 14.2 million phones to last year’s 14.5 million.

The Omdia report cites the decline of the Chinese telephone market, the pandemic blockades of Chinese cities, the Russia-Ukraine war, the political conflict in India and the general economic recession as reasons behind the decrease in shipments. The trend will likely continue into the fourth quarter.
