Nikon will reportedly stop production of its SLR cameras as planned Nikkei Asia. Increasing competition from smartphone cameras continues to displace the camera industry. The Japanese camera manufacturer will focus on new mirrorless camera models, and the Nikon D6 DSLR will be Nikon’s latest SLR.

An SLR (single lens reflex) camera uses a series of mechanical parts and mirrors to show an image through the lens or through the eyepiece. Mirrorless cameras have taken the industry by storm over the past decade or so. Additionally, smartphone cameras are becoming more capable and casual consumers no longer see the need to purchase a separate camera.

Mirrorless cameras do not wear out like SLR shutters do since they are not mechanical. In addition, they can shoot faster and process images faster than comparable SLRs. They are also built to take up less space and are therefore more compact. In 2020, sales of mirrorless cameras (2.93 million units) exceeded the number of SLR shipments (2.37 million) according to Japan’s Camera and Imaging Products Association.

“Nikon cameras have lost ground to smartphones, which have ever more powerful cameras,” he writes Nikkei. “Nikon aims to beat them by offering products with more unique features.” Canon is also expected to stop manufacturing SLR cameras in the next few years.

Mirrorless cameras account for half of Nikon’s imaging business with approximately 30% of SLR revenues. Nikkei notes that Nikon’s imaging segment brought in JPY 178.2 billion (~ $ 1.3 billion). Production and distribution of current Nikon SLRs will continue for now.
