We’ve recently been through a long-term review frenzy of foldable smartphones here at GSMArena towers, as we’ve already reviewed Oppo’s first competitor in space, as well as Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip3. So now it’s time to go back to the roots of the folding movement, and that can only mean one thing: turning our attention to the original line of traditional folding, which is, of course, Samsung’s Fold.
Now in its third iteration, the Fold is better than ever, but is it good enough to take over the world? Or is the “phone that opens in a small tablet” form factor still too niche, still too raw, even if we look at it in 2022? These are some of the questions that guided us in creating this long-term review of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold3.
This phone is no longer new, having been launched last August, so it has had plenty of time to “cook”, so to speak – any annoying software problem should have been fixed, for example. So is the Fold3 the best Samsung smartphone you can buy right now? Or does the fact that it folds down inevitably lead to some trade-offs in terms of performance, cameras, or battery life?
If you join us on the next few pages of this review, we’ll try to find out, as always, by putting a more subjective lens on things – if you’re just after the more objective numbers and the like, our regular review will serve you very well. But numbers and repeatable tests never tell the whole story of what it’s like to live with a device on a day-to-day basis, so that’s exactly what this long-term review is for.
We have used the Fold3 as our only smartphone for a long period of time, trying to delve as much as possible into what makes it work and where it doesn’t live up to expectations so that we can offer you an evaluation based on our experience with it, and not just numbers and cold facts.
Having said that, let’s find out together if leaflets are really the future of mobile phones, or just a fad that will inevitably soon turn into something else. And what better tool to help us on this journey than the latest incarnation of the one that started it all?
