Since the iPhone got Face ID, it was no longer possible to include the battery percentage in the status bar as there was now a notch that took up a lot of space. Users had to pull down the control center of the iPhone to get a look at the percentage of battery left.

iOS 16.1 brings the battery percentage to all iPhones with Face ID

With iOS 16, the battery percentage was added as a feature, and when enabled, it showed the percentage amount right above the battery icon in the status bar. It has been added to all iPhones with Face ID excluding iPhone XR, iPhone 11, iPhone 12 mini, and iPhone 13 mini.

In the first beta build of iOS 16 for developers, more users reported MacRumors forums where the Battery Percentage feature now allows all iPhones with FaceID notches to display a number above the battery icon.
