HMD Connect launched in early 2020 and made it easy to stay connected while roaming – users could choose between SIM and eSIM options and 14-day data plans for 120 countries.

Now HMD has silently revealed that Connect is shutting down. The service will stop working on December 15th of this year, which means you will lose access to any data plans you still had active. The company will stop selling data plans after November 15, so you can still pick up a data plan if you’ve been planning an overseas trip in the next month or two. Any remaining credit after December 15th will be refunded.

HMD Connect will close in December, the global roaming service was just over 2 years old

What happened? There is no press release to explain, just an update on the HMD Connect page. In hindsight, launching a roaming service in early 2020 was very poor timing as global travel began to halt due to the pandemic. Most of the restrictions have been lifted by now, but it may have been too late for the service.

Apparently, HMD Mobile will remain operational, but it is a UK-based MVNO carrier (and covers travel within the EU).

HMD also offers corporate connectivity services, which appear to be unaffected. For example, HMD Connect Pro offers roaming data plans for Internet of Things devices in over 180 countries and 600 mobile networks
