During this year’s CES, Google unveiled its Watch Unlock feature, which is essentially just another way to unlock your phone besides a fingerprint scanner or face unlock. The feature builds on an existing Active Unlock API built into Android 13. And according to you AssembleDebugthe feature may be close to launch.

Google may soon roll out its Watch Unlock feature to make it easier to unlock your phone

After messing with some low-level system flags, AssembleDebug was able to pull up a tutorial video in the Pixel watch’s settings menu to see how the Watch Unlock feature works. From what we’ve been able to gather after no fingerprint or face has been introduced to the phone, it will search for your nearby Wear OS device for permission to unlock the phone.

You can tap a notification or swipe up on the lock screen to unlock your phone in case your fingers are wet, dirty, face unlock doesn’t work or is disabled. Obviously, the watch should be on your wrist and close to your phone.

We don’t know why Google is holding back this feature, as it runs on Android 13 based API. Maybe the developers needed time to smooth things out and it will be introduced with Android 14. Alternatively, Google is waiting to introduce the new feature along with the Pixel 8 series and Pixel Watch 2.
