AMD has announced its long-awaited mid-range offerings in the Radeon RX 7000 series of graphics cards. The RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT were unveiled today at Gamescom 2023 and will be available starting September 6.

The 7800 XT and 7700 XT are based on the same RDNA3 architecture as the other RX 7000 series graphics cards. Both cards are based on a new Navi 32 GPU, which uses a similar chiplet design to the Navi 31 on the RX 7900 XT and 7900 XTX but different from the monolithic Navi 33 design on the RX 7600.

The 7800 XT features 60 compute units and beam accelerators, which is a 29% reduction over the 7900 XT. ROPs (Rendering Output Units) see a much more significant drop of 50% to 96. Game clock has seen an increase from 2000MHz to 2124MHz.

Memory also sees some reductions, with GDDR6 from 20GB at 20Gbps on the 7900 XT reduced to 16GB and 19.5Gbps on the 7800 XT. The memory bus sees a reduction from 320-bit to 256-bit, with bandwidth dropping from 800GB/s to 624GB/s. The capacity of the Infinity Cache also drops from 80MB to 64MB.

The 7800 XT has a typical card power rating of 263W. The card will feature HDMI 2.1 48Gbps and DisplayPort 2.1 54Gbps connectors with support for AV1 decoding and encoding.

The 7800 XT is priced at $499 and will compete with the $599 Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070. AMD says the 7800 XT averages 4 percent faster at 1440p. The 7800 XT also has 33% more memory than the 4070 with a wider memory bus, but the 4070 is also a 186W graphics card, making it significantly more efficient than the 7800 XT.

The 7700 XT is surprisingly a small step down from the 7800 XT, at least when it comes to the GPU. It contains 54 computing units and beam accelerators and the same 96 ROPs. The game clock is slightly higher at 2171 MHz.

The 7700 XT has 12GB of GDDR6 memory with 18Gbps memory speed, 192-bit bus, and 432GB/s bandwidth. The Infinity Cache is 48MB. Looking at the specs, even the power of the 245W card isn’t too far from that of the 7800 XT.

The 7700 XT is just $50 less at $449 and will only be available at board partners. It will compete with the RTX 4060 Ti 16GB, which is priced at $499. AMD claims a much more substantial 12% performance advantage over Nvidia’s card for the 7700 XT, but since it’s only $50 cheaper you might as well get the 7800 XT .

AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 3

AMD also revealed more details about its upcoming FSR3 technology, which is AMD’s take on Nvidia’s DLSS3. FSR3 includes frame generation technology, which AMD calls Fluid Motion Frames and can nearly double the frame rate. This, combined with the super resolution upscaling, can deliver almost triple the frame rate in titles like Forspoken. AMD will also introduce Anti-Lag+, a driver-based feature to reduce latency.

FSR3 will be compatible with Radeon 5000, 6000 and 7000 series graphics cards, although AMD recommends use on 6000 and 7000 series cards for best results. The tech will also work with Nvidia cards, with AMD claiming support for 20, 30 and 40 series cards, although the latter two will deliver the best results. No word on compatibility with older cards or Intel cards.

AMD has not yet known when this feature will actually be available to users. The company said Immortals of Aveum and Forspoken will be the first two titles to support the feature with confirmed support for ten additional titles, including Cyberpunk 2077, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and Black Myth: Wukong. Strangely, Starfield is not one of the supported titles.
