Google has laid off “a few hundred” employees, according to multiple reports. People from multiple divisions were affected, including those working on the Assistant team, as well as some on the Hardware team, responsible for Pixel phones, Nest home devices and Fitbit wearables.

According to a text reviewed by The New York Timesemployees received the following message:

We have had to make some difficult decisions regarding the continued hiring of some Google employees and we regret to inform you that your position will be eliminated

Google later confirmed the Assistant cuts and hardware layoffs. A statement from a Google spokesperson said the company is investing in its “highest priorities and significant future opportunities.”

The Alphabet Workers Union, a group representing more than 1,400 workers at Google’s parent company, said the latest layoff was “unnecessary.” The company “cannot continue to fire our colleagues while making billions every quarter,” a post on X reads.
