Google is currently rolling out a patch that addresses the overheating and battery drain issue reported by some users, especially those using Pixel devices. The update is being deployed server side and does not require any user intervention.

Google fixes overheating and battery drain issue on Pixel

The issue was highlighted by reddit users on the Pixel subreddit, most of whom were using the current and previous generation of Pixel phones. The culprit appeared to be the Google app, which showed unusually high background usage in the battery stats. Attempts to restore or reset were unsuccessful.

Google has also identified the Google app as the root cause of the issue following a change to the app’s backend. The patch being released fixes this very problem.

Google’s wording makes it appear that all Android devices have been affected by this issue rather than just Pixel devices. However, we have not received any reports from users of other Android devices. Also, our Pixel devices never experienced this issue, so it didn’t seem to be widespread in the wild on Pixel phones either.

As of today, however, the issues appear to be fixed, so you can rest easy if you were one of those affected.
