Google has not released a September software update for the Pixel 4a (the non-5G version), confirming its decision to officially end support for the smartphone. The phone was supposed to receive a final update in August 2023, and now, as the new package is available for the latest Pixels, we have official confirmation that there won’t be an extension.

Google ends software support for Pixel 4a

The Pixel 4a was a pretty unremarkable smartphone, and when we reviewed it, we were perplexed as to why Google released it as a light update to the Pixel 3a just weeks before the Pixel 5 launch in 2020.

When the Android 14 developer preview and public beta started hitting devices, the Pixel 4a wasn’t on the list and users couldn’t participate in the testing process, as Google never intended to update the phone.

It’s important to distinguish the Pixel 4a from the Pixel 4a 5G, which are two completely different devices. The latter is eligible for Android 14, the units have received beta software and will continue to receive software updates for another year, while the main OS update should be final.
