74.2 million smartphones were shipped to China in the first three months of 2022, down 14% from the same period last year. These levels are similar to the worst that the market has seen during the pandemic, in fact the new wave and related lockdowns have had a negative effect.

vivo overtook its brother Oppo to regain its first place in the market, even though it dropped to 19.7% of the market share. The selfie-centric vivo S12 and S12 Pro midrangers and budget Y-series phones (e.g. Y76s, Y31s) are credited for the company’s strong performance by analysts at Counterpoint Research.

Oppo was hit worse than alive and its share dropped to 18%, placing itself in second place, just ahead of Apple, which rose to 17.9%. The iPhone 13 was the best-selling phone in China for the quarter, although demand for the 13 series cooled after launch. Apple is one of the biggest beneficiaries of Huawei’s downfall.

However, it didn’t make as much as Honor, which went from a 5% to 17% share. The popularity of the Honor 60, 60 Pro and 60 SE has helped the company grow not only year after year, but also compared to the fourth quarter of 2021 (when it stood at 16.7% share). Huawei dropped from 15% to 6.2%.

The growth of Apple and Honor has brought them ahead of Xiaomi in 5th place. Analysts still saw strong demand for the Redmi K40 series and Redmi Note 11 series, even the cheap Redmi 9A proved popular. March brought the Redmi K50 series and the Redmi 10A, which should also be fine for Xiaomi.

Counterpoint reports that premium foldable devices made up less than 1% of smartphones sold in China in the first quarter. The limited supply of folding display panels kept prices high, which didn’t help the situation.
