Canalys has released the full report on global smartphone shipments for the first quarter of 2022 and the numbers show that Samsung is once again at the top of the charts. The South Korean conglomerate handled 73.7 million shipments in the January-March period and secured 24% of the global smartphone market share. A total of 311.2 million smartphones were shipped for the period, 11% less than in the same period last year.

Apple came in second with 56.5 million shipments with an 18% market share, while also boasting the top five companies’ only annual growth at 8%. Xiaomi (39.2 million), Oppo (29 million) and vivo (25.1 million) were the other top five companies in terms of shipments.

The Chinese market experienced significant dips during the period with Xiaomi, Oppo and vivo all losing more than 20% of their shipping figures compared to the same period last year. The shortage of components, ongoing COVID lockdowns, and rising inflation are all attributed to low demand. Honor was the only brand that seemed to do well over the period and took the top spot in terms of shipments with 15 million units sold.

The situation in Africa and the Middle East hasn’t been much better with Xiaomi shipments to both regions down 30%. North America was the only region to experience growth in the last quarter with Apple’s iPhone 13 series and Samsung’s Galaxy S22 trio leading the way. Looking ahead, analysts predict improvements in supply chains and a rebound in smartphone demand towards the second half of the year.
