Asus wanted to build not only the best gaming phone, but also a flagship: the Asus ROG Phone 8 series was redesigned to be more pleasant to use as a daily driver. There are three versions of the phone (four, actually), although the differences are mainly cosmetic.

The new ROG Phone is thinner and lighter: measuring 8.9mm and weighing 225g, compared to 10.3mm and 239g on the ROG Phone 7. This comes with a drop in battery capacity to 5,500mAh (500mAh less), but the optimized hardware offers almost the same battery life as last year’s model.

The display measures 6.78 inches like last year, but the new panel has thinner bezels, although this involves the switch to a punch-hole camera (previously, the selfie camera was embedded in the top bezel). On the plus side, the new model is much smaller at 163.8mm tall and 76.8mm wide, compared to the old model’s 173.0 x 77.0.

The new display has a 165Hz refresh rate as before, however it uses an LTPO panel so it can also switch to a variable refresh rate between 1Hz and 120Hz. Maximum brightness has been increased to 2,500 nits.

Asus ROG Phone 8 arrives with SD 8 Gen 3, telephoto lens and IP68 rating

Asus advertises the ROG Phone 8 as the first water-resistant phone: it has an IP68 rating (compared to just IP54 on its predecessor). Gaming phones prioritize cooling, which means little to no waterproofing. The ROG Phone 7 Pro had an AeroActive Portal that enabled convective cooling, the 8 Series uses conduction cooling instead.

This is done with a block of copper that runs through the motherboard and touches the back panel. Here, the heat is transferred to the air or, better yet, to the new AeroActive Cooler X. It is 29% smaller (by volume) and 10% lighter, so it is easier to transport. As a cooler, it has a larger contact area (2.6x), runs the fan faster (1.1x), and has a higher thermal efficiency (1.2x), which results in cooler much better.

The cooled chipset is obviously the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. It can be configured with up to 24 GB of LPDDR5X RAM and up to 1 TB of UFS 4.0. The basic configuration is 12/256 GB, the intermediate one is 16/512 GB.

In its attempt to make the ROG Phone 8 more pleasant to use during the day, Asus has added 15W Qi charging, so you can charge in airports and coffee shops without plugging it in. If you use wired charging, the phone supports 65W HyperCharge and a 0 to 100% charge is done in 39 minutes.

The 50 MP main camera (1/1.56″ Sony IMX890 sensor) is now equipped with a 6-axis hybrid gimbal stabilizer 3.0. In combination with the new software it enables Super HyperSteady Video mode. There is also a camera 13 MP 120° ultra wide angle.

New to this generation is the 3x telephoto lens with a 32 MP camera. It has OIS and 4-in-1 pixel binning (1.4 µm pixels). In addition to 3x, there is 10x Hyper Clarity AI zoom and up to 30x digital zoom. Super Night mode is available for taking photos in the dark. Please note that in some regions the ROG Phone 8 will have a macro camera instead of telephoto. The ROG Phone 8 Pro and 8 Pro Edition models will have cameras in all markets.

The new front camera has a 32MP sensor scaled down to 8MP by default (1.4µm binning). It has a wider 90° lens (compared to 73°), which makes it better for group shots.

Asus has used artificial intelligence to help you in gaming. For example, in Genshin Impact AND Hong Kong – Star Rail You can enable auto collect, fast forward, freeze running, and auto press to exit.

If you get stuck on a puzzle, you can use the AI Grabber to automatically scan the text on the display and display the relevant part of a detailed solution. Artificial intelligence can also be used to generate new wallpapers for your phone.

The Series 8 has full support for Microsoft Phone Link. This includes app streaming and screen mirroring, you can also drag and drop files and copy and paste between your phone and PC.
