Apple is developing a new foldable OLED screen that should eventually make its way into a foldable iPhone or iPad according to South Korea’s The Elec. The big twist is the lack of a polarizing layer on the panel that is currently used in some conventional foldable displays. The same polarizer-free display technology is used by Samsung in its Galaxy Z Fold3 and its Eco²OLED display. Apple is considering a similar approach for its foldable device.

Removing the polarizer layer allows for thinner foldable displays albeit at the expense of visibility and maximum brightness. Manufacturers are forced to increase the power consumption of the display in an attempt to increase the brightness accordingly, which negatively impacts the longevity of the foldable panels, so it will be interesting to see how Apple addresses these issues. Apple’s foldable phone is still years away at this point and we shouldn’t expect it before 2025 according to famed Apple expert Ming-Chi Kuo.
