Simple combat

One area where this game doesn’t really copy WoW is combat. The general combat mechanics in Royal Quest are very simple.

You have several basic attacks that you can use on the enemies inhabiting this realm. Using these attacks creates a special gauge (for the mage, it’s the focus gauge) which then allows you to use more powerful attacks.

This system is fun at first, but it can get a little repetitive in the end. Imagine playing Overwatch but only being stuck with the first character you chose. Sure, your starting attacks are great and your final skill is great. But it’s hard to imagine playing for hundreds of hours without getting more significant updates.

Put simply, the combat-related updates you receive in Royal Quest don’t seem significant and don’t dampen that feeling of repetition.

PvE versus PvP

Royal had a strange PvE vs PvE history. When it first came out in 2014, the developer emphasis was more on PvP. In fact, reviewers complained that PvE would stop abruptly as they progressed and were expected to do PvP grinding for progress.

Now, the PvP element of the game has largely diminished and PvE is arguably the biggest draw. Players go from taking on small creatures that roam the world to teaming up with other players to clean up dungeons filled with more rugged challenges.

As such, this shift towards PvE is a good thing. It is friendly to new players and offers a more rewarding experience.
