The racing genre often sees developers choosing one of two options, aiming to be as fun as possible or following the authentic path so that the game is realistic. iRacing is an extreme example of this. As a racing simulator, he has taken the task of replicating real-world racing in video game form very seriously. The question is whether iRacing has managed to stay fun while being so rooted in simulating real life.

The race

As you’d expect from a title that calls itself more of a simulator than a game, the actual guide has been designed to be as authentic as possible at all times. The end result is that driving on any track in iRacing is incredibly difficult.

The lack of driving aids and the need to use the steering wheel and pedals mean that you have to focus absolutely on everything you do. Otherwise, you will end up against a wall or stuck in a gravel trap. Most players will have to spend at least a couple of hours getting familiar with the different cars before taking them to the track, and finishing early is something that only talented drivers are likely to achieve.

Sanctioning body

While races in other games often fall into chaos, with players pushing other racers off the road and taking a liberal approach to the rules, the official competitions within iRacing are run by a proper team. FIRST is a sanctioning body that aims to ensure that the laws are followed correctly by all runners and will pay penalties to anyone who does not respect them. It’s an effective way to manage such a large number of users and keep the racing fair. Knowing that your driving is monitored also introduces a real nervousness to the process.
