MOORTAL COMBAT! The viscous and creepy arcade classic returns bigger and better than ever in Mortal Kombat XL. Following 2015’s Mortal Kombat X, the XL update adds nine new DLC fighters, each DLC costume, and a roundup of balance adjustments and gameplay improvements. But does it live up to high expectations?

Fight

Building on the foundation of Netherrealm Studios’ 2011 Mortal Kombat reboot, MKXL retains the same classic combat that the series pioneered. But it also brings modern additions like brutal X-ray moves. These give you a close-up look at how your sword shattered your enemy’s spine.

Combos aren’t as flashy as Marvel vs. Capcom or Guilty Gear. But there’s a visceral satisfaction that comes from juggling your opponents in the air while spraying enough blood to make a vampire blush.

Using a dedicated lock button shouldn’t be a problem for series veterans. But as a Street Fighter fan I have had some difficulty unlearning my habits of holding back. Obviously Fatality returns in all its gory glory. It’s not just a standard staple. That’s the reason for the creation of the Entertainment Software Rating Boards! No other game can offer the same level of violence as Leatherface hanging Reptile on a hook, sawing him in half and spreading his guts on the floor.
