Story mode

The story mode turns out to be more fun than it has the right to consider the story of the story modes in fighting games. With well-written, acted and animated footage, the story of Shinnok’s betrayal offers hours of fun, repressed only by sudden events that forced me to take the controller.

Fighting throughout history has been tough enough even as a self-proclaimed fighting game expert, to the point where I would have challenged the same enemy four or five times before taking it down for good. Thankfully there is an option to skip the toughest fights, although obviously as a man of honor I didn’t allow myself to use it. If history is something you seek in a fighting game, you can’t go wrong with MKXL.

Final verdict

As a complete package, Mortal Kombat XL is filled with blood-soaked content that is sure to delight any fan of fighting games. While some aspects are sketchy, Mortal Kombat’s huge cast of iconic characters, wide selection of game modes, and brutal gameplay offer more than enough value for money. So tell your friends to “come here” and enjoy some old-fashioned spine-tearing action.
