Another trip around the sun means another installment of SIE San Diego’s acclaimed MLB baseball simulation franchise The Show. Last year saw the release of MLB The Show 18. This edition sought to take advantage of the continuous improvements added to the prolific series throughout the life of the PlayStation 4.
The result is a game that falls into some of the pitfalls that annualized sports games tend to struggle with. MLB The Show 18 relies too much on the laurels of past rumors. It fails to innovate in ways and features that would entice annual shoppers to save their money for another try. New players, however, will find the most complete video game wearing the MLB license at the time of its release. You could spend dozens of hours beating, launching and managing all of MLB The Show 18 has to offer.
Game
From its wonderfully shoddy opening footage, it’s clear. MLB The show 18 it’s made by people with a love of baseball running through their veins. Don’t the shots of children dreaming of becoming the next Clayton Kershaw or Kris Bryant convince you of the authenticity of the game? So, getting a feel for the tight controls is sure to get you around.
The game transports you directly to the action of the starting pot through the responsive controls. You can choose the easily digestible directional style or opt for the precise nuance of the analog control. Likewise, pitching has a satisfying degree of organic feedback. The pulsating diamonds of the controller gave me the best possible timing and aiming performance.
I just wish this information was presented in a dedicated tutorial mode. Instead, forced explanations in the game come as annoying interruptions rather than helpful guides. This won’t be a problem for MLB The Show passionate. However, new players may feel stuck and overwhelmed by the game’s unconvinced attempt to accommodate them.
