Mafia’s graphics won’t impress anyone 17 years after its original launch. However, over the period of time, the huge world and detailed textures are incredibly impressive. The voice acting, sound effects and soundtrack are also better than you might expect.

There is also a sophisticated weather and day / night system. The changing environment really helps to create an atmosphere, especially during the campaign missions.

The game constantly manages to set exactly the right tone and can effectively create drama in a scene. Likewise, the cars, weapons and characters are all rendered in a high degree of detail considering this game was released in 2002.

Final verdict

Mafia offers a fantastic storytelling experience that will draw you into a gripping story. There are very few complaints.

However, those who choose to play on the PlayStation 2 or Xbox will find problems. You can expect to see lower performance and clearly lower graphics on consoles than on PC.

On the other hand, if you play it on your preferred platform, Mafia ends up being a great game. The story is exceptional and the open world rivals that of titles like Grand Theft Auto.
