A shallow city

As fun as the game is when you understand it, the same cannot be said of Night City itself. The settings look great, there is no question about that. However, it all seems so dead and lifeless. Sure, there are tons of people and cars out and about, but none of them really do anything noteworthy.

None of the other citizens of Night City really pay attention to V. That is, unless they want to fight, of course. In a city full of shops, stalls and NPCs, you can’t interact with 90% of them. There aren’t many actual vendors, there aren’t any side activities aside from side missions, and there are only a few ways to interact with the city, if at all.

For example, I took out the aforementioned gorilla arms for a test drive and punched the side of a car with as much force as the character could muster. Not a single NPC even looked at the crash, including the poor character inside the car. It felt really bizarre and somehow a breaking dive.

These AI problems also spill over into combat. Enemy AI doesn’t seem to be as smart as it could be. They simply take cover and wait to be dealt with as they shoot you.

Final verdict

Cyberpunk 2077 is a pretty good game. It will definitely not be unanimously adored, but most likely by a fan base that simply enjoys the world. The gameplay is fun, but tailored to a specific type of RPG player. Both the main storyline and the sub-stories are really interesting. Although the world seems soulless and I have contested some of the choices made regarding the humor and edginess of the game.

This is definitely a game that should have been delayed for a few months. Of course, the game will likely be wonderful to play after a few updates roll out. However, the way the publication was handled is a bit jarring and underwhelming.

All in all, Cyberpunk 2077 isn’t the greatest game ever made, nor the worst. It is simply a good action game that could turn into a real diamond at some point.

Cyberpunk 2077 is now available on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X | S, PS4, Xbox One and Google Stadia.
