The road to the living legend
Cyberpunk 2077 puts players into the cybernetically enhanced body of V. This character will be customized by the player at the start of the game. During this process, players will choose one of three backgrounds for their version of V. The three options are Nomad, Streetkid, and Corpo. The background you choose seems to have little effect on the game, overall.
Your choice of background will change the way the game opens. These 20-minute sections are extremely light on gameplay and not even that fascinating in terms of story. However, players will have some options to use their background in conversations while playing the game. Even if it’s not a lot, it’s at least something. However, I wish they had expanded significantly on these backgrounds, as I was very disappointed to see how superficial the choice is.
Out and about with Mr. Healthy
After these three introductions, the game narrows into a predetermined narrative path. This story sees V participating in a high-risk robbery of one of the most dangerous companies in the world. As with all robberies, things quickly go wrong and the main character becomes infected with a very specific virus. The said virus leaves V with Johnny Silverhand’s personality trapped in his mind.
Silverhand is played by none other than Keanu Reeves, and he honestly does a great job with it. I’m not even a huge fan of the actor, but I really enjoyed seeing Johnny appear every time he did. However, the main point of the story is to see V get rid of Silverhand’s personality.
This puts Johnny in some sort of antagonistic role, even if it’s fun to have him around. Throughout the story, the player will delve into the secrets of Johnny’s past, learn how he became a cyber spirit that haunts the player, and meet many interesting characters along the way. All in all, it’s a great story that kept me amused the whole time.
