Oppo just unveiled a fourth phone with the model name “A55” – well, this is an Oppo A55s 5G, to be exact. It is not entirely clear what the “s” means as the phone is basically the same as the Oppo A55 5G. We must note that this is quite different from the other Oppo A55s 5G, which was launched in Japan. There is also the 4G model, Oppo A55.

Oppo has once again chosen the Dimensity 700 chipset to power the phone, a 6nm chip with two Cortex-A78 (2.4GHz) cores, six A55 (2.0GHz) and a Mali-G68 MC4 GPU. And a 5G sub-6 modem, of course, a key selling point over the 4G A55. By the way, the Oppo A55s 5G for Japan used a Snapdragon 480.

The original A55 5G had 4GB of RAM as a base, this starts at 6GB. There is also an option for 8GB of RAM (LPDDR4x in both cases), storage is always 128GB with the option to add more via the microSD card slot. Note that ColorOS 11.1 can add 2GB of virtual RAM (and yes, the phone runs Android 11).

The display is a 6.5 “LCD with HD + (20: 9) resolution and standard 60Hz refresh rate, just like the A55 5G (and unlike the other A55s 5G, which has a 90Hz HD + display) The screen has 4,096 dimming levels, but we haven’t seen any mention of the expected brightness. Neither does the tempered glass.

The selfie camera hole contains an 8MP sensor. On the back we find a triple camera with a 13 MP main module, a 2 MP macro camera (4 cm focus distance) and a 2 MP depth sensor. Again, nothing has changed here: the three A55 5G models fall short of their 4G sibling in the camera department (50 + 2 + 2 MP on the back, 16 MP on the front).

The same goes for the battery: all three models have 5,000mAh power cells, but the 5G ones don’t have fast charging (the 4G one charges at 18W). The retail box contains a charger, USB A to C cable, protective case and some other basic items. The Japanese A55s 5G has a smaller 4,000mAh battery, it really is a different phone despite the same name.

The Oppo A55s 5G is on preorder today in China, sales will begin on the 25th (next Monday). The base 6/128 GB model costs CNY 1,100 ($ 175 / € 160 / ₹ 13,000), while a unit with 8 GB of RAM can be yours for CNY 1,200 ($ 190 / € 175 / ₹ 14,500).

This is the biggest difference between the “s” model and its predecessor: the A55 5G launched at a higher price last year, CNY 1,600. And it’s not even available anymore, so this is more of an Oppo A55 5G (2022). The other A55s 5G has never left Japan, so we can’t do a direct price comparison.

There should be three colorways – Blue, Gold and Black – but we only see the Blue and Black options in Oppo’s online store (follow the Source link if you want to pre-order).
