ArcheAge is a free-to-play sandbox fantasy MMORPG developed by XLGames and published by Trion Worlds. However, some users, myself included, have had problems launching it on Steam. Instead, I suggest you download it from the ArcheAge website itself.

Characters

You start on either the Nuia or Harihara continent, depending on which faction you choose. You are given free rein in ArcheAge to play your way and be the character you want to be. ArcheAge has a character creation suite that is robust enough to make you look the way you want. While the game was released in 2013, it would be hard to find a character creation suite that offers nearly the same depth as found in ArcheAge.

Creating your character is only the first of many steps you need to take. From there you will play through an introductory sequence. This helps you get used to the world and some of the later game options, such as flying a glider and naval battles.

This is where my problems with ArcheAge started. By creating a new character to play during the intro sequence, I ran into multiple freezes and crashes. Even tweaking the settings and adjusting the options, I would run into the same crash on multiple occasions.

ArcheAge Review | Gammick

Dejected, I went back to my other character to play a little more to familiarize myself with the combat systems of ArcheAge, which is probably one of the best parts of the game. The combat feels fast and fluid although for the most part it is the typical MMORPG fighting style found in many other games in the genre – press a button and press multiple buttons.

ArcheAge is a sandbox MMORPG, which allows players to experience what basically amounts to a second life. You can build huge castles and claim the riches of the land for yourself in a deep player-driven economy. You can team up with other like-minded players to protect the fortune you have amassed in large siege battles and naval combat. Or, if you really wanted to, you could become an outlaw, stealing gold and glory from slain enemies.

ArcheAge requires all types of players to lead the economy: collectors, artisans and traders. You can master a diverse skill set to create trading goods, houses, ships, and even castles. You can then transport these goods for trade, all over the world. This won’t be easy to do, however, with the aforementioned outlaws and pirates to deal with. So, you’d better take some friends with you for the trip. Unless you feel safe.
